7 Common Hypnotherapy Myths and Misconceptions

7 Common Hypnotherapy Myths and Misconceptions

Hypnotherapy is mysterious, and it may not be the first thing you would pick if you were seeking help. Some people say that they decided to 'try' hypnotherapy as a last resort when everything else had failed. And the reason may lie in the preconceived notions that are commonly believed.

Let’s go through those preconceived notions and see if they are true or false. Once you understand what hypnotherapy really is, we can explain how hypnotherapy can help you.

Not everybody can be hypnotized

Well, in fact, what we call the trance state is a natural state, and we are all in this state several times a day, to allow our conscious mind to rest. It means that everybody can be hypnotized if they want to.

I’m afraid that if I am hypnotized I will lose control, and I don’t know what could happen

The hypnotherapist cannot make you do anything you do not want to do. The hypnotherapist doesn’t have any power of control. The hypnotherapist helps you reach a goal that you discuss together. There is nothing more than that.

After one session only, my problems will be gone, without me having anything else to do?

Unfortunately, as said before, the hypnotherapist is not a magician. Your involvement in the process is key for you to solve your problem.

For some issues like phobias or fears, for example, one session may be enough. For other issues, one to 10 sessions maximum is required.

Is there an age limit for hypnotherapy?

There is no limit. The oldest patient I have worked with was 85, and the youngest, almost 3. There are different needs and different ways of conducting the session, according to the patient’s age.

It is necessary to be in a deep trance state to get the best results.

False. The depth of the trance state has nothing to do with the efficiency of the session. Conversational hypnosis can create real changes in your life, and yet you are very conscious.

Hypnotherapy doesn’t really help solve a problem. I heard that after a while, other symptoms can appear.

This is called a substitution of symptom. It happens when the therapist hasn’t worked on the origin of the symptom, but only on the symptom itself. When a problem is there, it means that there is a part of you that is expressing something. Hypnotherapists are trained to work on the root cause of the problem to avoid any other symptom to appear.

Hypnotherapy can only work face to face, in-person

Actually, online sessions are just as efficient as face to face sessions. The only requirement is that the subject believes online session can work. Of course, there are also some technical requirements like a good internet connection, and being able to undergo the session in a quiet environment.

During the first part of the hypnotherapy session, the hypnotherapist asks questions to understand what you would like to change or what you are struggling with, and what you expect for the session. This detailed discussion leads the hypnotherapist to decide how they can best help you. The second part of the session is the hypnosis itself to help you reach your goal. Usually, at the end of the session, there is an improvement that the subject can feel, and the process goes beyond the session itself.

Hypnotherapy can help with many different issues, whether they are psychological or physical: changing a problematic behaviour, sleeping problems, stress, anxiety, feeling of insecurity, phobias, quitting smoking, losing weight, healing a trauma, grief, making important decisions, support for heavy diseases, recurring physical problems with unexplained cause (headaches, back pain, fungal infections, cystitis and other somatization)…

The idea is to use hypnotherapy to improve the quality of your life and your well-being.

How to choose a hypnotherapist? It is a good idea to follow a recommendation from someone you trust or to follow your intuition.
