How do I know if my baby needs to see an Osteopath?
Birthing is a beautiful process where we often overlook the pressure the baby withstands and that is often related to the issues they suffer after the birth and growing up. The stress of it can cause colic, difficulty feeding, sleep problems and other issues.
The pressure of the contraction and the tight squeeze through the birth canal often results in asymmetrical head shapes and bruising. The neck is often stretched during birthing process and can be comparable to adult whiplash injuries.
Though caesarian births may seem like a less traumatic option for the baby, caesarian births misses out on the moulding of the cranium and the waking of the central nervous system.
A baby or child over-tired and in distress can affect the whole family. But the good news is that this suffering can be relieved with paediatric-inclined osteopathy. As a soothing, non-invasive therapy, cranial osteopathy is particularly successful with babies.
Among the conditions we as Osteopaths work with are:
- Feeding and attachement difficulties
- Excessive crying and irritability
- Reflux, colic, wind
- Sleep disturbances
- Constipation
- Teething
- Flat Spots
- Blocked tear ducts
- Post-surgical tongue ties
So what is the experience for babies like?
Parents usually bring their bring their baby in for a check up soon after delivery. The goal of the treatments is to make a general assessment and genlty unwind them so they are straight and happy. Babies are usually comfortable lying on the treatment table, applying light pressure specifically to areas where the body can release stress and tension. There are other positions your baby can be placed in for treatment as well (feeding position, etc.) Your practitioner may discuss these options with you to decide what option is best.
