So what are the symptoms of an unhealthy gut?
A new Australian CSIRO report, Gut Health and Weight Loss, has noted that people who are overweight or obese are more likely to experience gut symptoms as a result of poor dietary habits. This is because eating a less than ideal diet can negatively alter the composition of the bacteria in the gut - commonly termed the microbiota.
So what are the symptoms of an unhealthy gut? These can include heartburn, a feeling of excessive fullness, nausea, lots of burping, bloating, stomach noises, abdominal pain, lots of gas, and/or abnormal or irregular bowel habits.
Eating a diverse range of fibre-rich foods is one of the keys to creating a healthy environment for the ‘good’ bacteria who can help improve overall gut function, however getting more fibre won’t automatically lead to weight loss, or resolve all your symptoms if the rest of your diet contains energy-dense, processed and low-nutrient foods or your digestive capacity is compromised in some way. To get results, a dietary clean up is needed and sometimes a bit of healthy digestive support to kick-start the process.
Swapping out unhealthy processed and refined foods for their healthier wholefood equivalents has greater health benefits than weight loss or a happy gut; skin can become clearer, mood can improve and energy levels soar! What’s not to like?
